Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet that deals with transporting cargo & passengers by sea. The Merchant Navy fleet includes cargo ships, container ships, barge carrying ships, oil tankers, gas tankers, bulk carriers, refrigerator ships, passenger ships as well as roll off/roll on ships. The ownership of these merchant vessels could be by the government or private shipping companies.
This process of transporting cargo on the merchant vessels across the globe requires a set of qualified, well trained and competent seafarers. Besides safely navigating these ships on the high seas, seafarers also ensure that the cargo is loaded, stowed, cared for and discharged as per the internationally accepted procedures and norms and under the strict compliance of various regulations.
Merchant Navy offers a career like no other. It offers not only excellent remuneration but also tremendous opportunity for adventure and travel. A qualified seafarer is eligible to take up a sea going career with either National shipping companies or international shipping companies (both public sector and privately owned).
A merchant marine vessel can be divided into three departments namely Deck, Engine, and Saloon departments.
The officers from this department primarily look after the ships navigation, loading / unloading of cargo and the general maintenance and administration of the ship. The officer joins in the rank of 3rd officer and gradually promoted to the rank of 2nd officer, Chief Officer and finally the Master of the ship.
The engineers are responsible for maintenance of ship's engine room. They join as 4th Engineer and step by step, get promoted to 3rd, 2nd and Chief Engineer, subject to their passing the competency exams and performance onboard the ship.
The Electro Technical Officer is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all electrical and electronic equipment, installations and machinery. This also includes radio communications and electronic navigation aids.
The Ratings generally assist Deck Officers and Engineers for a safe navigation and maintenance of the vessel.
The saloon department consists of Chief Steward, Cook, steward and laundryman. The saloon department manages the kitchen, laundry, medical and other service.
Marine Fitters and Welders are responsible for fabrication and general repairs of the vessel.
